Data Source
Travel data comes from gift travel filings submitted to the Office of the Clerk, U.S. House of Representatives. These filings disclose privately funded travel taken by House members.
Collection Method
Gift travel filings are published as scanned PDF forms. Trip details, sponsors, destinations, and costs are extracted from these forms. Congress does not publish this data in any structured or machine-readable format.
Coverage
Full OCR extraction has been completed across all 7,474 filings (6,789 original plus 685 companion traveler filings). Sponsor, destination, and trip purpose are available for every filing. All filings link to the original PDF for verification.
Cost Data
Cost figures are available for 99% of all filings, including both 119th Congress and historical pre-2025 trips. The remaining 1% are forms where the scanned PDF was too degraded or the cost table was not present. For all filings, costs reflect what the travel sponsor reported paying, not what the member personally spent. Always verify against the linked original PDF.
Why This Matters
Privately funded travel is legal but creates access. Trip sponsors include think tanks, foreign governments, trade associations, and advocacy organizations. Knowing who pays for a representative’s travel helps voters understand who has their ear.
What This Does NOT Show
This tool does not include government-funded official travel (taxpayer-funded trips) or campaign travel. It only covers privately sponsored gift travel that members are required to disclose.
Update Frequency
Gift travel filings are retrieved periodically from the House Clerk. Members are required to file within 30 days of completing travel; recent trips may not yet appear.
